  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

Thank you, Madam Speaker. At the time. Could I please yield the floor to. My colleague from Helen.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

    Representative Todd.

  • Chris Todd

    Legislator

Thank you, Madam Speaker. I'll keep my remarks brief. I think most of you know that while I do serve as a state rep, my day job for the past 15 years has been high school football coach.

  • Chris Todd

    Legislator

You know, I coached at Hilo high from about 2010 through 2011, and I've been helping out at Kamehameha Kapalama the last Few years with a buddy of mine. And, you know, people often ask, what's the real difference between, you know, football back back in Hilo and over here?

  • Chris Todd

    Legislator

And I think when you look at the way athletes develop on Oahu and the professionalism from the coaching staff at the youth levels kind of heading into high school, the level of competition and character development that happens here, it's really unique and special, and I think it's really apparent even when you go overseas.

  • Chris Todd

    Legislator

So I just want to thank everyone for being here today. Congratulate you folks on your success and to the coaches and the parents who've had to sacrifice a lot of time and money, I've been there. I just want to thank you for all of your work and really doing your part to set them up for success.

  • Linda Ichiyama

    Legislator

    Thank you, Representative Holt.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

Thank you. Madam speaker, today I rise with immense pride to recognize and celebrate a group of extraordinary young athletes who've carried the spirit of our islands to the national stage and returned victorious. The 808 elite youth football team.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

Hailing from right here in our beloved 808, you know, in many different neighborhoods around our island, these young warriors, the 11U squad, have shown that when shown what happens when aloha, hard work, discipline and unbreakable Ohana come together on the gridiron.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

Madam speaker, in recent competitions, 808 Elite traveled thousands of miles to Florida to face the best in the country. And they proved that they belonged amongst the elite.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

They stunned the nation by taking down the number one ranked team in the nation in commanding fashion, slaying the giant and sending a clear message that Hawaii football is a force to be reckoned with. We have many of our team Members here today, but on the floor, we have three of our team Members.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

We have Titus from Benjamin Parker Elementary. We have Soane from Ewa Makai Middle School, and Capper from Honolulu Middle School. Can we give them a round of applause? But colleagues, we have a lot of other players in the audience. Can all of the players from 880 league please stand for a round of applause? Guys, come on.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

No shame. Stand up. Okay, you guys can sit down. You can sit down. Thanks, guys. You know, they also went undefeated at the island's best tournament, you know, in Las Vegas, claiming the championship there standing undisputed and unquestioned and unmatched. Even in the face of challenges, these young men responded with maturity, dignity and class.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

You know, they played not just for wins, but for the pride of their communities, their family and the entire state. Madam speaker, we do these floor presentations to Celebrate those for their national accomplishments. And we're so proud to be here today to honor 808 Elite for bringing their national recognition home.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

But it takes more than players and coaches. You know, it takes families that become families to make all of this really special. Can all of the families please stand up? Coaches and families in the audience, can you guys please rise? Come on. No shame. Thank you, guys.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

And, you know, as I was guiding some of the families in this morning, I heard a few of them saying, Oh, this is my first time here. This is your guys first time too.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

And, you know, I think it's really important to bring the kids here and the families to normalize being here in the capital, you know, and remember that you guys are here for such a great thing, right when you guys won the championship.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

And, you know, to get to the coaches, you know, two of you know, they're not only my friends, they're my family Members from when I was young. Mike Tanuvasa and Ricky Esubio, if you guys do, can please rise. You know, we all know what it takes to run sports teams. I know a lot of us have families.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

All of the parents definitely know what these two put in, you know, the time, money and effort to fly. Dozens of kids, families rent Airbnbs, you know, and you didn't lose anybody, right? We all came back. So, you know, and you guys won. So even double bonus.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

But, you know, it takes, like I said, I grew up with these guys when the last time I shared a football field with them, we were the 1999 Melekliki Makobo champions. But, you know, it's been a long time since then. But it takes people like this to give back, you know, to take time out of their schedule.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

You know, Mike's father, when we were children, had a handy van and would drive around to the different housing projects in Kalihi and pick us up to take us to football practice.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

And that's the kind of dedication that it takes, you know, to keep our communities going, to uplift our communities and show people that they have different kinds of opportunities. So thank you guys so much for everything that you guys do.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

So I just want to say to the players, the coaches and families and supporters, mahalo nuilo for all the great work, the players, for the great, you know, football on the field, but being great individuals as well, you've inspired our keiki across the islands.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

You know, I know Mike and Ricky are my friends, but I've been seeing it on social media, not only from them. So you guys have A very wide reach across our islands. And you're making a lot of people proud. You remind us that no distance is too far, no opponent is too tough.

  • Daniel Holt

    Legislator

And when you carry the spirit of aloha and strength of our people, we can do anything. So may your success continue and light the way for generations to come. Thank you guys so much and congratulations.

  • Linda Ichiyama

    Legislator

All those in favor say aye. The motion is carried. Representative Holt, please proceed with the certificate and lay presentation it. The chair will call a recess to allow the Members of the House to meet and congratulate the honorees. Recess. Will the House come to order? • Nadine Nakamura

    Legislator

    Please proceed.

  • Elijah Pierick

    Legislator

Alrighty. So in this bill, basically you can change your gender. And it's expanding access for people to change their gender. We're basically saying God, when you made somebody a male, you didn't do a good job or we disagree with you. The Bible says in Genesis 1:27, God made male and female. He created them.

  • Elijah Pierick

    Legislator

Jesus said in Matthew 19:4, he made them male and female. So I don't want to be calling Jesus a liar when God makes somebody and then we're trying to change their gender. Even if a man goes to surgery, cuts off his penis, has a vagina sewed on, that doesn't make him a female.

  • Elijah Pierick

    Legislator

The chromosomes stay the same, the DNA stays the same, and in the DSM 5, you can get diagnosed with mental dysphoria if you have distress about your gender identity. I'm a licensed mental health counselor. There's a lot of people that can help people understand how God made them versus us as legislators encouraging people to change their gender.

  • Elijah Pierick

    Legislator

    I'm voting no.

  • Nadine Nakamura

    Legislator

Representative Kong. So ordered. Representative Tam.

    Thanks. Madam speaker in support.

  • Nadine Nakamura

    Legislator

    Please proceed.

  • Adrian Tam

    Legislator

This bill just changes existing laws to allow for advanced practice registered nurses to submit affidavits for new certificates of birth. I don't know why there's just this is about trans issues.
