Joy San Buenaventura, who represents Puna, attended Lunalilo Elementary School, Washington Intermediate School and graduated from McKinley High School. San Buenaventura earned a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
She was first elected to office as the Hawaiʻi state representative of District 4 in 2014 before running for and winning a Senate seat in 2020. A 30-year resident of Hawaiʻi island, she currently lives in a photovoltaic-powered home in Hawaiian Paradise Park with her husband. San Buenaventura volunteers her time helping the public access the courts through the Judiciary’s Self-Help Center.
