Bio
Donna Mercado Kim was first elected to the Legislature in 1982 but left after one term in the House to run for the Honolulu City Council. For the next 16 years — from 1984 to 2000 — she was a City Council member. Kim made a successful run for the Senate in 2000 and has held that seat ever since. She represents Kapālama, ‘Ālewa, Kalihi, Kalihi Valley, Ft. Shafter, Moanalua Gardens and Valley and Red Hill.
Known for her strong interest in fiscal accountability, Kim has been one of the sharpest critics of the University of Hawaiʻi and has chaired the Senate Higher Education Committee for many years. She is a former Senate president and Ways and Means Committee chair.
Kim is a graduate of Farrington High School, attended the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa and received a bachelor’s degree from Washington State University.
