Thank you, Madam Speaker. I'm honored tonight to introduce Surfrider Spirit Sessions, a grassroots nonprofit that has been serving Hawaii's youth for 19 years. They are a mentorship program founded in partnership with Hawaii State Family Court System that engages teens through metaphor and the sport of surfing. Why surfing, you may ask?
- Chris Lee
Legislator
Because He Nalu, a practice born in the waters of Waikiki, became so much more than a sport for these teens. It becomes an opportunity for you to recognize that they are more powerful, courageous, and supportive than they ever thought possible. It connects them with Hawaiian culture and environmental stewardship and gives them a true sense of belonging.
- Chris Lee
Legislator
This unique program pairs at-risk, adjudicated youth with healthy adult role models to give them a community that will guide, celebrate, and support them when they need it the most. We've witnessed Surfrider of Spirit sessions get kids stoked on life, school, giving back, and themselves as they discover new identities through their surfing Ohana.
- Chris Lee
Legislator
New identities like leader, surfer, friend, mentor, and champion in training. In fact, if it wasn't for a young junior mentor who went through the program...reached out to me by email and shared his personal testimony, they probably wouldn't be here today. When I call your name, please stand and remain standing.
- Chris Lee
Legislator
Our youth and junior mentors, Avi Garza, Harrison Mathrey, Ellie Torres, Rylan Davis, mentors, Bert Nobu-Thornburg, Yvonne Gacy, board member and mentor, Lara De Guzman, Executive Director and Founder, Cynthia Derozer, Savannah Murra,y and Tina Howe. Welcome to your House of Representatives. We ask that their names be inserted into the journal. Thank you.

Members, any discussion on these items beginning with House Bill 110? Representative Iwamoto.
- Kim Coco Iwamoto
Legislator
Thank you Madam Speaker. I rise in support with one small reservation. As I read the amendments to the statute, I was first of all, I'm really happy that we're doing supporting local farmers with, you know, resources from the Department of Education to feed our students.
- Kim Coco Iwamoto
Legislator
However, I was concerned with and I know it's language that this body is familiar with, but the local value added processed food as part of the 30% spending made me a little bit concerned, thinking that it might be something like we can go buy spam, open it up, marinate it in local soy sauce or local ginger, local garlic and then that would be count against the 30%.
- Kim Coco Iwamoto
Legislator
And that kind of concerned me because I'm like how do farmers. How do our. How does our. How does that support our farmers and help us to get to greater food, you know, sovereignty. But that's my only concern. Thank you.
