Yes, Madam Speaker. We have one floor presentation today. House Resolution number 216, congratulating Landon McNamara for winning the 11th Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational. This resolution is offered by Representative Quinlan.
- Nadine Nakamura
Legislator
It has been moved and seconded that the resolution be adopted. Any discussion? Representative Quinlan?
- Sean Quinlan
Legislator
Thank you, Madam Speaker. Esteemed colleagues, I rise today to honor and celebrate the remarkable achievement of the north shore's own Landon McNamara, who has recently etched his name into the annals of surfing history by winning the 2024 Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational at Waimea Bay.
- Sean Quinlan
Legislator
This prestigious event, held only under the most formidable ocean conditions, pays tribute to the legendary Waterman Eddie Aikau. Landon's victory is not just a personal triumph, but but a testament to the enduring spirit and prowess of our local surfers.
- Sean Quinlan
Legislator
Madam Speaker, I'm not sure if you've ever had the opportunity to attend the eddy, but when you're standing on that beach in Waimea, it's as if the invisible hand of God is pushing a wave of water towards you.
- Sean Quinlan
Legislator
It's an incredible sight and it almost beggars belief, the amount of grit and courage and determination a person has to have to even get in the water on those days, much less actually win the competition. You know, Madam Speaker, the North Shore is a really small community. We're very close knit, we're very tight.
- Sean Quinlan
Legislator
I've actually known the McNamara family for many years, and Landon probably doesn't remember this, but I can remember about 15 years ago when I was sponsoring one of his father Liam's surf tournaments. Landon and his brother Makai were there running around, getting the trouble, doing kids stuff, stuff.
- Sean Quinlan
Legislator
And it's just so incredibly gratifying to see that little kid grow up into the man he has today with such a beautiful family. His partner Darian, who's a friend of my wife's, his adorable son Chaz.
- Sean Quinlan
Legislator
And when someone from the North Shore wins the eddy, it gives our entire community that incredible burst of pride, that feeling of hope and optimism to keep the championship belt on the North Shore for one of our homegrown talents. We are all just so, so proud of his accomplishments, you know.
- Sean Quinlan
Legislator
As the son of renowned surfer and Contest Director Liam McNamara, brother of Garrett, Landon has been immersed in the culture and discipline of the sport from a young age. His dedication culminated in a performance that captivated thousands of spectators and earned him a perfect fit 50.0 ride, securing his place atop the leaderboard.
- Sean Quinlan
Legislator
Beyond the waves, Landon has also made significant contributions as a musician, enriching our community with his artistic talents. His multifaceted achievements embody the diverse strengths of Hawaii's people. Today, we commend Landon McNamara not only for his extraordinary accomplishment in surfing, but also for inspiring future generations to pursue their passions with unwavering commitment and aloha.
- Sean Quinlan
Legislator
Members, please join me in congratulating Landon McNamara and his lovely partner, Darian.
- Lauren Matsumoto
Legislator
It's with great admiration and respect that we gather today to celebrate the Ed Big Wave Invitational. And of course, Landon, it's something that's special. I spent most of my childhood growing up on the North Shore.
- Lauren Matsumoto
Legislator
My Uncle Jeff was actually an alternate in the very first eddy, and so I know how much it means in watching several of our friends compete year after year, the eddy reminds us what it truly means to charge forward with passion, to embrace the ocean and to honor the values of respect, perseverance and community.
- Lauren Matsumoto
Legislator
So this year, we are so honored to celebrate Hawaii's own Landon McNamara. Congratulations.
- David Alcos
Legislator
Madam Speaker, in support. Please proceed. I was talking to Landon just as coming in and I told him how big was the wave and I looked up the ceiling. He said it was about this big. Can you imagine? It scares me right now, just thinking if I can catch a wave.

By increasing penalties for violations, for temporary restraining orders and orders for protection, we are making it clear that domestic violence will not be tolerated in our communities. This measure ensures that offenders are held accountable and required to complete intervention programs aimed at breaking the cycle of abuse.
- Rachele Lamosao
Legislator
We passed this bill in honor of Teresa Cachuelo, whose life was tragically taken due to domestic violence. Her history, her story, is a painful reminder of why we must continue strengthening protections for survivors. Today we honor her memory with action ensuring that no family has endured the same heartbreak. Thank you so much.
