  • Nadine Nakamura

    Representative Shimizu.

  • Garner Shimizu

    Legislator

Thank you, Madam Speaker. I rise in support. With reservations and the reservations is just the concern about businesses, legitimate businesses that are affected. But I'm all for protecting the youth. Thank you.

  • Nadine Nakamura

    Legislator

Representative Kong. No vote, so ordered. Turning to top of page 7. Standing Committee Report Number 554. Standing Committee Report 555. Standing Committee Report 556. Standing Committee Report 557. Standing Committee Report 558. Standing Committee Report 559. Representative Pierrick, no vote, so ordered. Standing Committee Report 560. Representative Parrott, no vote, so ordered. Standing Committee report number 561.

  • Nadine Nakamura

    Legislator

Standing Committee Report 562. Standing Committee Report 563. Representative Garrett in opposition. Please proceed.

  • Andrew Garrett

    Legislator

So these, this bill basically has tax dollars towards a child development center or a child watching center where the government can watch your kids. There's lots of daycares. This is just a state ran daycare.

  • Andrew Garrett

    Legislator

So I think that, you know, parents should pay the private sector if they want the private sector to have a part and raise their kids, but not the government.

  • Nadine Nakamura

    Legislator

Standing Committee report 564. Representative Garcia, with reservations, so ordered. Representative Pic.

  • Andrew Garrett

    Legislator

No vote without. With comments, please proceed. Similar to the last Bill, this is basically all the residents of Hawaii. Part of their state income tax goes to the state budget. State budget goes towards feeding kids in school. It's a very, you know, it's a great talking point.

  • Andrew Garrett

    Legislator

It sounds wonderful, but we should let parents and they choose to have sex if they choose to have kids, if they choose to raise their kids, let them pay to feed their kids, not everybody else.

  • Trish La Chica

    Legislator

Representative Laa. Madam Speaker. And strong support. Please proceed. Our Committee on education had the opportunity to hear from amazing students who testified in front of us and just shared very, you know, heartwarming. So I mean, just very. No heartbreaking stories of coming to school with this being their only meal of the day.

  • Trish La Chica

    Legislator

Having heard from teachers who've had to break it, you know, have to share the news that they couldn't. Their own students can't even stand in line and go to the lunch line because their own accounts can't be replenished by their parents.

  • Trish La Chica

    Legislator

Those who to be eligible for free and reduced lunch, a family of four needs to be making $47,000 for free lunch. So if you make $47,000. 47,001. You can't get a free lunch. If you're a mom and you know, you have a child, you're not Representative. Please address the rash. Sorry. Sorry. Yes, Madam. Madam Chair. Madam Speaker.

  • Trish La Chica

    Legislator

It's like Inception. So we're strong support of this because it's not just the nutrition that a child deserves. We all know that a child can't learn when they're hungry.

  • Trish La Chica

    Legislator

But we all know that this is something that, you know, all, all, all, all parents shouldn't, all students shouldn't even have to worry and shouldn't even have to think about. And we're just, you know, on behalf of the Committee on Education, we're just, we're just very, very, very just encouraged to see.

  • Trish La Chica

    Legislator

And we would like to see the body support this bill and see it through this, this session. So in strong support. Madam Speaker. Representative Kapela.

  • Jeanné Kapela

    Legislator

Thank you. Madam Speaker in strong support. I would like to. Thank you. I'd like to adopt the words of the previous speaker as if they were my own. And I would just like to add that this bill boils down to either we care about kids or we don't.

  • Jeanné Kapela

    Legislator

No child should be hungry and no child can learn if they are hungry. Thank you.

  • Nadine Nakamura

    Legislator

Representative Reyes Oda speaking in support. Please proceed.

  • Julie Reyes Oda

    Legislator

As the representative from Kona has just said, you know, when we talk about feeding kids, I want everybody to understand what the dollars and cents are for. How much it costs to feed a reduced price lunch, which is what this would be. And for an individual student, that's 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch.

  • Julie Reyes Oda

    Legislator

So if this passes, what we're asking. Sorry, what. I guess what the Legislature is asking for is to pay $0.70 if a kid so chooses to eat both per day for each kid that qualifies for reduced lunch.

  • Julie Reyes Oda

    Legislator

And that's not for kids who are free lunch because they're already free or for kids who are full price because they still have to pay. Thank you.

  • Nadine Nakamura

    Legislator

Any further discussion? Seeing none, we will turn to standing Committee report number 565. Representative pick no vote, so ordered. Representative Garcia. No vote, so ordered. Standing Committee report number 566. Representative pick no vote, so ordered.
