Appointed to the Senate by GOP Gov. Linda Lingle in 2010, Ron Kouchi became Senate president in 2015. He represents Kauaʻi and Niʻihau.
Raised on Kaua‘i’s Westside, he is is the great-grandson of a Portuguese immigrant from São Miguel, Azores, Portugal, who arrived in Hawaiʻi in 1883. Kouchi graduated from Waimea High and attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He served 11 terms on the Kauaʻi County Council and is a former president of the Līhuʻe Baseball League and a member of New Hope Kaua‘i.
